Chapter Fourteen

Shelli was tired. This first week of her internship had taken a sour turn beyond what she could have imagined. She thought maybe there would be some belligerent kids, some rude teachers, maybe even some upset parents. She didn’t anticipate a student disappearing. She wanted to go home and crawl back into bed, but it was nearly lunch time, and she wanted to be able to sleep tonight. She figured she could go through student information at the school and see if there was anything unusual about any of the other kids. Delia Franklin had been stuck to Kendra’s side every day at lunch, and Jason Williams was close with Blake already. She didn’t really think these kids would have hurt a classmate, but it wouldn’t hurt to check. After all, she’d already pointed a finger toward Blake without knowing anything. It would be better to have a fuller understanding of these kids.

She hit the drive-thru for a sandwich and large coke and drove to the school. Her car pulled into the parking lot with a slowness that matched Shelli’s motivation. Tire tracks led toward the back of the school, but the parking lot was empty, which was no surprise on a Saturday. Her boots crunched in the snow as she exited the car. Looking down at the words etched into her drivers’ door, she felt an extra chill. She finished the sandwich on the way to the door, dropping the wrapper in the garbage and holding out her key fob to unlock the doors.

It was eerie being the only person in the building. The hallways were dark and there was no buzz of chatter coming from any of the rooms. She could smell the remnants of the week’s meals, and the heavy odor of teenagers who often forgot deodorant. Ice shook in her coke as she walked in the dark. Emergency lights lit the hallway enough to see where she was going, but not much more. A crash sounded from the cafeteria, and Shelli jumped. Peeking in, she saw the room was empty except for a broom which lay awkwardly in the middle of the floor. It must have been balanced against a table. She knew her fear was irrational, but her body disagreed. Adrenaline rushed through her veins as her heart pounded like a drum. A vacant school is nothing to be afraid of, she reminded herself.

She continued through the building to the counseling office. As she walked past the trophy case in the lobby, she thought she saw a shadow behind her and turned quickly to confront her company. No one was there. Looking back at the glass, she realized her reflection shone both in the glass and the mirror behind it. “Get it together, Shelli,” she said aloud and unlocked the office door.

Inside were walls of locked cabinets. Within these were the records for every student who had come through these halls for at least a decade. Another smaller office held even more records dating further back, and the smell of old paper.
